Creating authentic writing pieces is a main goal in third grade. The students continue their learning of writing letters by engaging in a pen pal activity with students from Struthers School. We begin the year by interviewing classmates to find similarities and differences and organizing the information in a well-written, descriptive paragraph. We continue throughout the year learning about different poetry forms, creating haikus, cinquains, limericks, couplets, etc. Some other highlights of this year's writing block are learning how to write opinion and informative pieces and to research topics such as penguins. Something new recently is learning how to use Google Docs and create a slide presentation on Google Slides with our researched information. Additionally, the students enjoy representing a famous person at our Wax Museum after researching and organizing information to present. Families enjoy attending the Authors' Tea at the end of the year to see all of the student created writing pieces from the year. Students continue to work on the mechanics of writing as well as engage in peer conferencing. Although students have focused pieces they must complete, they get opportunities to write non-focused pieces on topics of their choosing. Writing is a favorite time of the day for many students.
