The tenth graders are reading the novel Night, a memoir written by Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel. The students have some background and knowledge about the Holocaust from last year, We begin the pre-reading activities with a video of Elie Wiesel being interviewed by Oprah as they walk around the remains of a concentration camp. This helps to establish a personal/human connection to this tragedy.
We will read the novel as a group and the students will be answering short and extended response questions and citing textual evidence, also.
We have completed the novel and the students are now reading short stories about children that survived the Holocaust. They will be creating a power point and presenting it to the class.
Next, we will be doing a research project on Genocide: Now and Then. The students will research and complete a graphic organizer and then create a poster and present the research to the class.
