The students will be reading "Charles," a short story that expects the reader to use inferencing skills to answer comprehension questions and to use context clues to identify unknown words and phrases. The students will also be focusing on the various themes in the story and will be responsible for choosing a theme and citing textual evidence to support their choice. Students will be assessed as if this was a short story on the AIR test- the questions will be modeled like those on the test allowing the students to become more familiar and hopefully more comfortable with the whole testing process.
Next, the students will be revisiting the steps to writing a good argumentative essay. The unit will consist of various activities to review what the students learned in the 8th grade. We will begin writing essays and reading non fiction passages and poetry as we continue to prepare for the EOC exams.
