              appropriate clothing instead of uniforms.

           * There will be a Dress Down Day on Oct. 5th for $1.00

            * State Testing Practice homework is due Oct. 6th

            *  Hopefully you are finding the webpage helpful for announcements, assignments, and

vocabulary and spelling lists, among other things.

            *  Our Spotlight Student activity is underway!!!!  First up, Kailyn Ferreri!  Thank you to

Kaiyln’s dad for coming in to the classroom to talk about his important job of being a

police officer  for the city of Youngstown for the last 4 years.  He also worked for the

Sheriff’s office and at Geneva on the Lake.  He showed the students the equipment that

he uses, such as a taser, handcuffs, a ballistic shield, and bulletproof vests which the

students got to try on.  Out of all of the equipment, Mr. Ferreri says, the object he uses

the most is his PEN!  He showed a series of videos telling about the job of a police

officer, cops in action, as well as the vehicles used.  We got to out to his police car and

test the lights and sit in the car like a real police officer.  All students became honorary

officers when Kailyn’s dad passed out badge stickers.  His final message was:  Police

officers are there to help.  Call 911!  The week ended with a visit from Kaiyln’s bird, Blue.

Thank you to Mrs. Ferreri for visiting today.

Have a Great Weekend!!!!!

Rock, Rock

Shale Who?

Shale we talk about the awesome Rock, Rock jokes sent in?!!!!

Hope you had fun making up a rock, rock joke!!!  It was fun reading them!  Look for the book version to come home next week!

Tuesday, the 26th, we will have a Dress Down Day for $1.00.  Students can wear jeans and a college team shirt to school for $1.00.

Picture Day is October 3rd.  Envelopes to purchase pictures came home this week.  All students will take a picture even if pictures are not being purchased.    Students do not need to wear uniforms, however, no jeans please.  School appropriate dress up clothes may be worn.  We do have gym that day; therefore, students may want to bring tennis shoes.

Keep sending in box tops!!!  Thank you to the PTO for offering programs to earn money for our school.  The Box Tops contest will run until Oct. 20th.  Information about the PTO and programs can be found on our school website.  Click on the PTO link.  Thank you!  Also just a reminder, orders will be taken up to October 4th for PTO’s current fall fundraiser.

We will begin our Spotlight Student activity next week.  We are very excited.  I modeled the activities this week and would like to thank Mrs. Davis, our school Literacy Coach, for coming in to talk to us about her adventures of being a rubber stamp inventor!!!!!  Known as Mrs. Kisses, when she began teaching there were no “kiss” stamps available to stamp her students’ papers.  So she created one!!!!! And still has it!!!!  She used it to stamp our students’ papers.  You may have seen it!  She showed us other kiss stamps that have come out since.  The day ended with every student getting a “kiss” from Mrs. Davis!  A Hershey kiss that is!!!!!

                                        Have a GREAT Weekend!!!!!!!!!

                                         Good Luck Little Rockets!!!!!

  • WOW!!!  What awesome rock hunters we have in third grade!!!!  The rocks sent in are perfect and very interesting!!!!  Thank you!!!  We can’t wait to begin observing them!!

  • Book orders are due, Tuesday, Sept. 19th

  • Also on Sept. 19th we are very excited to begin Italian class with Ms. DiRienzo!  Ciao!!!

  • We have been visiting the computer lab weekly to practice using the features on the keyboard so the students will be familiar with responding to questions on the computer for their state test next month.  Any practice at home would be beneficial as well.  Some websites like Dance Mat or www.kidstyping.weebly.com will provide practice.

  • We also visit the lab to engage in a math program called Prodigy.  Students are very excited, so excited in fact that they tell me they are playing at home.  GREAT!  I can see their progress daily.  If you would like to see their progress on the different skills, you can create a free parent account.  A note came home today with directions.  The note also includes your child’s username and password.  They have another copy of this information in their planner.   Some students even have their username and password memorized.   smiley

  • Just a reminder that the office requires a note when a student returns to school after an absence.

Have a Great Weekend!!!!!

Go Little Rockets!!!!

Yeah Third Grade!!!!!!         w  September 8, 2017

  • Happy Birthday wishes go out to Kailyn Ferreri, whose special day is tomorrow, September 9th.  Thank you for the fun birthday treat!

  • Our first Scholastic Book order forms came home today.  All orders need to be in by Tuesday, September 19th.

  • Students took their first Spelling test today.   Hopefully you had a chance to read over the FYI paper that came home explaining the format of the test.  Any spelling tests hung up on the Hard at Work board will be sent home the following week.

  • Please continue to check your child’s planner and Homework folder nightly.  Also all papers on the Finished side should be removed nightly.  Students need your help in making sure papers are organized and current.    It is extremely helpful to the students to have current papers only in the folder and beneficial to have completed papers reviewed on a regular basis.

  • The office requires a note explaining the absence of your child from school.  Also, remember to send in a note if your child will be leaving a different way at the end of the day.  Sometimes students are not sure of a change and become concerned at the end of the day and even panic.  Also I can better prepare if I know ahead of time that a student will be leaving before regular dismissal.  Please send in a note.

  • Just a reminder that Poetry Folder needs signed weekly.  I told the students to take a pencil with them when they sit down to read the poem.  Sometimes moms and dads get too busy and forget to sign the poetry folder later.

  • As you may have noticed, I have been giving the students choice on homework selection.  Many are cracking me up by choosing to complete ALL of the papers!!!  Too funny but I appreciate their motivation and hard work.

  • Class Dojo will begin next week.  Thank you for already signing in!!!!!!  Remember to use the marks as a discussion point with your child and know that we are working on creating a classroom where all have an opportunity to learn and have fun!

                                                              Have A Great Weekend!!!!

Dear Family,

We are off and running!!  Thank you for preparing your child with the necessary school supplies requested.  Also, many thanks for making sure homework was completed and returned this week.  Hope this is a very exciting indication of what the year will be like! J  I also appreciate the prompt return of all the necessary forms for the office.   Just a reminder, student fees are due, $20 per child or $50 per family.

The students looked wonderful this first week of school.  Students do not need to tuck in their shirts, however, school colored socks, hair ribbons, sweaters and of course clothing in school approved colors must be worn.  Also gym shorts, yoga pants, neon socks and socks with any logo or designs cannot be worn.  A complete dress code is on our website.

We would like to welcome new students, Kayla Weinreber, Caitlyn Smith, and Mason Wyberg to our classroom.  We are excited to learn all about what makes them so special.

We are still in the process of learning procedures, but the boys and girls are adjusting well and working hard.  I am very proud of them!!!!  The students have been working on problem solving strategies and addition strategies.  They were also introduced to the Math Journal.  In it will be a Problem of the Day that will get the students to think and solve.   The students discovered that they are real “scientists” and next week they will be putting their observation skills to the test. They had their first poetry quiz on The First Day and we put all of the students’ names on the “Wall” as we practiced our handwriting and typing skills in the computer lab. Did your child tell you that he/she wrote his/her first word in cursive!!!!!?  Very Exciting!!!! Next week students will interview a classmate and find out what they have in common. We will continue to build stamina to independently read books of our choosing.   We’ve certainly been busy and are ready for what’s ahead!

                  Your child’s Specials schedule is:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday – Music -  Ms. Gapsky

Tuesday, Thursday – PE  -  Mr. Ballone

*****PLEASE NOTE – students will alternate their Friday Special weekly!!!!!

Library – Thursday

Please view our website frequently. It is http://www.lowellville.k12.oh.us/.  It contains very useful school wide information   On my particular website you can find our weekly homework, announcements, our weekly newsletter, as well as helpful websites, story titles, vocabulary and spelling lists.

As you know, students will again be using a planner.  I typically do not send home the planner home on weekends or holidays nor do I plan for weekend homework or Monday tests if possible.

Information will be sent home on Tuesday about a communication program between home and school called Class Dojo.  With this program I can track certain behaviors throughout the day.  You will also receive an access code to view reports. Until the students get used to being back in school where shouting out, talking, not following directions, and not staying on task disrupts learning, you may see more marks on the report.   Please, please, please use this information as a base for discussion with your child and not an indication of what the year will be like.  Most students are already “catching” themselves and trying really hard to make our classroom a place where all have an opportunity to learn and have fun.   I hope to fully put the program in place beginning the next full week of school.  I will be recording the behavior marks through my computer or the app on my phone, just in case the students are wondering why I have my phone out.

All papers should be removed nightly from the Homework Folder.  The only papers that should come back are homework and forms or papers that require a signature and any notes.

I am so looking forward to keeping the smiles going all year long.  If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (330) 536-8426 Ext. 130 or email me at L.Matisi@lowellvilleschool.org.

Have a GREAT weekend!!!!!!
