Coach Spotlight - Mr. Pilkington - 9/12/19

Interviewed By - Kaley Toth - Social Media Communications

How long have you been a coach with Lowellville Schools? 18 years as a Lowellville coach.  I started in 2002 as the Boys Golf Coach and also served as the Girls Golf Coach from 2005-2008.

Did you play the sport you coached? Yes, I played 4 years at Needham High School in Needham, Massachusetts.  I started playing at age 12.

When becoming a coach, how did you want to impact a student's life?  I wanted to teach the student athlete how to play the game of golf and to understand the rules of the game so they could carry it with them through their later years.

What is one of your most memorable moments while coaching?  In 2009, we won the district championship and qualified to be 1 of 12 teams in the state of Ohio to participate in the Division III State Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.  We played on Ohio State University’s Scarlet Golf Course.  The 2009 Lowellville Boys Golf Team was the first Lowellville team to participate at State in 34 years.

Which school has consistently been the most competitive?  Springfield High School

What enjoyment do you get out of coaching?  To see the players, improve their game where they see the ball go in the air on their drive and their putts go in a straight line to the hole.

What is the most exciting aspect in the game of golf? To see the players, smile and react with excitement when they hit a good shot and enjoy the game.

What if any challenges do you find when working with the student athletes?  Finding enough time to work with each player during practices and matchers.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?  To try and give back the positive aspects of good sportsmanship I’ve been taught throughout my experiences with the game of golf.
