Title: 7th - 8th English Teacher

Interviewed By - Kaley Toth - Social Media Communications

How long you been in education? This is my first year teaching.

If you could choose any other career would you change?  No. I have recently changed careers to become a teacher and I have been wanting to teach for a long time.

What is the biggest thing you do to make an impact on a student's life? I try to really get to know my students. Finding out all I can about who they are and what their interests are, can make a huge impact on how they are learning, not to mention what we are reading and writing in the classroom.

Did you learn the same concepts when you were in high school as you are teaching now? Yes.

What is the most memorable moment that ever happened in your class or to you as a student? During my student teaching I taught a unit on Greek mythology with 8th graders. The students really enjoyed reading and writing mythology. On my last day of student teaching the students in one of my classes asked me if I could be their high school teacher next year. It was an incredible feeling to know I had made a positive impact in their education.

What are your hobbies outside of the classroom? Spending as much time with my family. My son is very involved in music and theatre so that keeps my family very busy. And reading, of course!

What is rewarding to you about your job? I love working with students. There is nothing more rewarding than watching them during an “aha” moment,  witnessing a sense of pride in something they have written, or listening to their excitement as they tell you about a great book they just finished.

Who is or was your biggest role model? Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to grow up to be like my mother. She is one of the strongest, funniest, and most compassionate people I know.

What advice would you give to a student that is struggling in high school? Ask for help. Ask a friend, a classmate, a teacher, a guidance counselor, a parent, ask someone. If you still need help, ask again. You will be surprised how many people are able and willing to help you.

What made you decide that you wanted to work at Lowellville Local Schools? Lowellville has a wonderful reputation as a strong, family oriented community. I wanted very much to become a part of the Lowellville community and am grateful for the opportunity.

How many years have you been a teacher? This is my first year teaching.

What inspired you to become a teacher? My son…and my nieces and nephews. Teaching them as they were growing up made me realize how much I wanted to teach. When I decided to go back to school, my family was very supportive and encouraging.

How would you describe your teaching style? Creative.  I am always trying to incorporate different ideas into the classroom that will interest and challenge students.
