We are excited to be starting a new math program this year called Bridges. Students will engage daily in an activity known as Number Corner. This will be in addition to their math instruction that will encourage and provide opportunities to learn all of the ways to solve a math problem. No one way is the best. Students will use strategies to help them think about the process as well as the answer.
Bridges involves using all types of manipulatives as well as learning by playing math games. A favorite in third grade is of course, learning multiplication! As much as it is important that the students memorize their facts, it is also important for them to understand the skill to help them solve any problem that may seem complex. It will still be a good idea to keep those flashcards handy though! We have math races frequently against the other third grade! What fun! (and practice!) Students will be responsible for taking the AIR Performance Based Assessment on the computer this year. Every strategy learned and practiced during the year will benefit the students on this math assessment.
