Spanish Club

The LHS Spanish Club serves to promote and experience the Spanish language and many cultures of the Spanishs-speaking world.  Through the Spanish Club, students are able to participate in cultural celebrations and activities outside of the classroom.  The yearly Spanish Club schedule in the past, has been as follows:

Sign-Ups and Club Photos

October/November - Día de los Muertos
Assemble the Day of the Dead Altar and have tortilla chips, fresh salsa and Zuko (pineapple, mango and horchata)
Students spent a few class sessions creating memorials for people who have recently passed away.  Many students honored their dear relatives, friends and pets.  Others chose to memorialize celebrities and public figures.  I've noticed that often times, creating a Mexican Day of the Dead inspired memorial seems to help students remember their loved ones in a special way.  As a teacher, it is always emotional to see the hard work and love that goes into each of these memorials which include the following about their departed loved ones:
*their individual favorites, hobbies, and interests
*their name, birthday and date of death
*a photo of them and also images of their interests
*how they are related to the student
These memorials are placed on the Day of the Dead altar, along with traditional Día de los Muertos items such as candles, cempazuchitl flowers (marigolds), sugar skulls, calacas (wooden skull figures), papel picado banners, food offerings and more...  Student-created Day of the Dead crafts and projects are also displayed.  Projects and crafts included:
José Guadalupe Posada inspired color by number in Spanish
José Guadalupe Posada inspired color by number in Spanish

Día de los Muertos Nichos
Individual Day of the Dead Memorials to honor loved ones or noteable personalities who have passed away
